Notes: The third of twelve new 'Standard' BR designs after nationalisation, designed at Brighton and
built at Swindon 1951-1957, under the direction of R. A. Riddles. This class was lighter than the class 5,
with wide route-availability, except for Southern Region engines with 5,000 gallon tenders.
The boiler was similar to the Stanier 2-6-4 tank engines and Standard derivatives, and the engines had
rocking grates and self-cleaning smoke-boxes.
Some were fitted with double chimneys, and many survived until near the end of steam.
Six survived the scrapper's torch, two are in mainline service. 75062 was built in May 1957
and worked most of her life in the Leicester, Nottingham and Crewe areas. Illustrated here as
may have appeared after an overhaul in 1963, she was withdrawn in February 1968.
